FILMS + IMFORMATION

INSPIRATION

MUSIC AS MY MAIN INSPIRATION

My playlist was mainly the inspiration for this film; I was listening to random mixes for revision and thought how influential British music is in gangster films and how that was primarily the reason to why I liked them so much – they drove the emotional of the film without these badass characters getting too emotional themselves. I originally started to look into playlists labelled ‘British Gangster’ and then diverted my interest into specific film tracks. This led me to looking into ‘Ocean’s 11’ and ‘The Gentlemen’ for inspiration. The song which lead me to wanting to make a Gangster film was ‘psycho killer’, so it only felt right to plan to feature it in the finale cut. When listening to it I found it illustrated the ideal gangster mastermind while diverting from the typicality of gangster and heist films by having it a female character. This to me felt perfect as it would follow the typical narrative conventions while allowing me to develop it into my own. I decide it would be used to introduce my female lead as the song itself begins to describe a mastermind type character that I would hope to make like my own. ‘Shimmy shimmy Ya’ would be my next song following my intro, I think it has a cool yet mischievous tone which would be a perfect parrel for some action which introduces the henchmen characters and the main basis for the plot. When watching movies like the ‘Gentleman’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’, I found they had moments of sadness which was put to music which drove the scene instead of having the character explicitly emotional, for this scene I decided I would want a scene with the main character running slightly injured and then the henchmen come in to help her run. For this I felt a slightly upbeat and emotional tune that ‘ Under Pressure’ could provide would create a nice moment for all the characters that would allow the viewer to emphasise and connect with the characters portraying them as almost a found family. My initial ending of the character's story line would be set to the song ‘Loaded’. My idea for the conclusion of these characters story is for there to be a twist where we think the main characters have been defeated by the ‘big bad’ character. The scene would follow the ‘big bad’ relaxing, listening to the song ‘loaded’ on vinyl, then the scene would slowly reveal our twist in which the main character has a gun to the back of the ‘big bads head’. Before we see what happens the scene will cut to black at the point in which the song says ‘ we’re gonna have a party’, leaving the ending ambiguous to the viewer. Our final song will be in an end credits scene in which we get our finale twist in which it is revealed that the girl pitching the Gangster film is in fact the gangster herself. It will follow her returning to her car after the film gets rejected. It will be a shot of the inside of the car where her two henchmen sit. When she enters the car they will get the assumption that the film pitch was rejected. The henchman behind the wheel will then say, ‘Well, that’s entertainment for you’ and then the credits will continue to the song by the Jam of the same name. I feel the number of songs included with the time limit of 5 minutes is quite ambitious but necessary as all of them prick a certain plot point, its not as if the whole song will be used as well, it will be edited so only certain bits are used and ‘that’s entertainment’ will be in the credits so will be excluded from the five minutes.

INSPIRATION FROM GANGSTER FILMS

INSPIRATION FROM THE GENTLEMEN I would like to be influenced from the opening scene from The Gentlemen. What i enjoyed most from this scene was the stylised set of the pub which introduces our main character and everything we need to know about him in a minute, while subsequently filling the viewer with more questions by giving us an ambiguous start to the film. However, instead of starting my film like this I would intend on using a similar narrative to end my film on, reversing the roles of the hero and the faceless villain by having the faceless villain become shot by the hero just as the viewer is led to believe all hope is gone. I would also like to create the false sense of security which is created in the bar through the music set up and drink pouring. INSPIRATION FROM PULP FICTION A scene from which I draw inspiration from is the boot shot. This scene appears in numerus gangster genre films, and I feel it is just an interesting shot type to have. Something about a boot shot make me think a plan is being formed and will just add dimension to something that could be a boring shot otherwise. Another scene which I have been influenced by is the glowing suit case. Perhaps this could be my way of making the conflict between the ‘big bad’ and the Gangsters unknown to the viewer, I feel in a plot that isn’t meant to make too much sense using something like an ambiguous suitcase could give them something to fight over without having to waste time explaining too much.

INSPIRATION FROM THE SET SHORT FILMS

INSPIRATION FROM SLAP The cinematography in this set short film was my personal favourite, the framing, shot type and composition of each shot are all equally beautiful and i believe that there is not one moment of the cinematography which wasn't made to have a meaning. In particular the shot which stuck most for me was the wide, establishing, mid, long shot of the main character walking towards the camera down the middle of a street. It is a beautiful shot where we see the character is full cross dress for the first time and the way its filmed gives the viewer time to reflect about the character and what he is about to do. I almost feel like its an introduction to him as his true self, almost like he's unapologetically presenting himself to the camera and viewer confidently. In my own film id like to recreate this scene but as an introduction to my main characters. INSPIRATION FROM TIGHT JEANS One of the most interesting films we watched from the set list, because of the bizarre conversations yet mundane setting of the film. However the part which stood out for me was the dynamic between the three main characters. Their acting with each other seemed completely natural and to the viewer they had a believable friendship. In my own short film id like to recreate their close knit friendship and have decided because of this to have three main characters in my own film to try and recreate the banter which those three had as I'd like my film to have that believable friendship aspect and comedic undertone.
